What is intumescent sealant and what is it used for?

Intumescent sealant is a special type of sealant that expands when exposed to heat. The term "intumescent" comes from the Latin word "intumescere," which means "to swell up." This property makes intumescent sealant particularly useful in fire prevention and protection.

When exposed to heat—typically at temperatures above 300-400 degrees Fahrenheit—the intumescent sealant expands to many times its original volume. As it expands, it forms a char, which is resistant to heat and acts as an insulating barrier. This helps to slow the spread of fire and smoke through joints, gaps, or openings in building structures.

Intumescent fire sealant is commonly used in construction in areas where there are gaps that could allow a fire to spread, such as:

  • Around pipe and cable penetrations in walls and floors
  • In joints between walls and floors, or walls and ceilings
  • Around door frames and windows

By sealing these potential fire pathways with intumescent sealant, the spread of a fire can be significantly slowed, providing additional time for building occupants to escape and for the fire department to arrive and extinguish the fire. This can help to save lives and reduce property damage in the event of a fire.
