What is galvanized wire rope and what is it used for?

Wire rope is comprised of multiple strands of steel wire twisted into a helix to create a rope. Combined with wire rope zip clips and wire hangers, these can be used to support and hang ductwork.

Which industries use steel wire rope?

This type of suspension of ducting is typically used within the construction industry, where the wire cables are used as an alternative to threaded rod.

Sectors within the construction industry where wire rope supports are used include:

  • Retail – shopping centres and cinemas
  • Commercial – hotels, offices
  • Industrial - factories
  • Education – schools and universities
  • Food processing
  • Medical – hospitals

The list doesn’t end there though, there are many other applications where wire rope can be used. As long as they are used properly and safely within the working load range.

Wire rope vs threaded rod

There are many reasons why you may choose to use either threaded rod or wire rope, below we are going to list some of the advantages of using wire rope as opposed to threaded rod.

  • Speed - Steel wire rope suspension systems can often be installed a lot quicker than threaded rod because the process is a lot simpler. Threaded rod support systems require more preparation steps, for example measuring and cutting to a specific size
  • Adjustability - When small adjustments to the positioning of the ductwork are needed, wire rope systems can be easily adjusted.
  • Flexibility - Unlike threaded rod that is very rigid and requires precision, wire rope offers a more flexible approach which allows fitters to suspend ducts in more complicated situations.
  • Weight - Compared to threaded rod, galvanized wire rope has a much higher strength-to-weight ratio. Because of the weight reduction, manual handling risks are reduced. This is also highly beneficial for logistical reasons.
  • Minimal tools needed - The only tools required to fit a wire rope suspension are cutting tools to cut to length opposed to the installation of a threaded rod support system which requires the use of several tools.
