Ducting systems are a popular air management solution and are often used to refer to HVAC ventilation aspects. However, you’ve probably noticed that there are different terminologies used in this area. Perhaps the most confusing words to establish the difference between are “ductwork” and “duct work”. They sound like two versions of the same thing, however, there are slight differences between the two words that can turn out to be interesting and useful when coming across both versions.
Let’s see what dictionaries have to tell us on the matter…
When used as one word, the ductwork meaning is referring to “ducting” or “a system of ducts”. It’s used as a noun and is literally translated into “a pipe, tube, or channel that conveys a substance”. Lennox offers a detailed description of ductwork, explaining the word in the following way:
“Ductwork refers to the system of ducts (metal or synthetic tubes) used to transport air from heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment throughout your home. Properly installed and well-maintained air ducts are a key component of indoor air quality and home comfort.”
So how does ‘duct work’ differ?
Rather than describing the actual system, duct work is used to refer to the process of performing work on the actual ducts. For example, to use your ductwork or ensure that it’s functioning properly, you’ll need to do some duct work. Generally speaking, most people will refer to a ducting installation or ducting maintenance but it is all ‘duct work’.
There’s also the possibility that someone has misspelled ‘ductwork’ and have used a space between duct & work. It is a common misspelling but, technically, the two terms have different meanings.
By clarifying that duct work and ductwork have two separate meanings and being aware of these small differences it’s less likely to trip you.
